Charity Cyber Security Awareness Month 2024

Oct 1, 2024 | Charities, Cyber Essentials

Empowering charities to improve their cyber resilience with Cyber Essentials

Throughout October, IASME will be working with the National Cyber Security Centre and participating Certification Bodies to educate charities about the cyber threat they face and inform them about the benefits of Cyber Essentials.

Registered charities can receive free guidance and a discount on the Cyber Essentials certification.

Criminals attack charities via the internet in the same way as they attack other organisations, seeking to steal information and money, deliver ransomware into their network or access their email account to impersonate them.

The Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2024 states that around a third of charities (32%) report having experienced some form of cyber security breach or attack in the last 12 months. This is much higher (66%) for high-income charities with £500,000 or more in annual income.

What can a charity do?

Good cyber security is often as simple as getting the basics right. Cyber Essentials represents the UK Government’s minimum baseline standard for cyber security for organisations of all sizes. The annually renewable certification scheme is aligned to five technical controls designed to prevent the most common internet-based cyber security threats.

By achieving Cyber Essentials, a charity can demonstrate commitment to cyber security and protection of customer data. Increasingly, Cyber Essentials certification can also open doors when bidding for contracts and funding.

Discount to the cost of certification

If you are a registered charity, and you sign up and pay for Cyber Essentials between the 1st and 31st October, you will receive a discount to the price of certification. Charities wishing to take advantage of this promotion can apply from 1st October by contacting any of the participating Certification Bodies. Find out more.

To help charities achieve certification, IASME has created a range of guidance which can be found on The Cyber Essentials Knowledge Hub guidance for charities
