The Trainee Cyber Essentials Assessor Programme

Unlocking cyber security careers

The cyber security sector is experiencing unprecedented growth, fuelled by our increasing reliance on digital systems and the ever-present threat of cyber attacks. At the heart of this expansion is the Cyber Essentials scheme, a UK Government-backed initiative designed to help organisations protect themselves against common cyber threats. As more businesses recognise the importance of Cyber Essentials certification, the demand for qualified Cyber Essentials Assessors has surged.

However, a significant challenge has emerged: the requirement for Assessors to have at least three years of experience in IT or cyber security has created a bottleneck, limiting the pool of eligible candidates and slowing the growth of the scheme. This issue reflects a broader skills gap in the cyber security sector, where employers struggle to find experienced professionals, while many talented individuals with qualifications but little or no experience face barriers to entering the field.

A new pathway for aspiring cyber security professionals

To address this challenge, IASME with the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) have developed the Trainee Cyber Essentials Assessor programme. Officially launched as a pilot scheme at last year’s CyberUK event, this initiative is designed to attract individuals with limited or no prior experience in IT or cyber security and provide them with the skills, knowledge, and mentorship needed to launch successful careers in the field.

The programme offers a structured, entry-level pathway into the cyber security sector, diversifying the talent pool and creating opportunities for aspiring professionals to gain hands-on experience.

How the programme works

The Trainee Cyber Essentials Assessor programme begins with a two-day, in-person Cyber Basics training course, which introduces participants to fundamental cyber security principles and practical skills. This hands-on course covers essential topics such as securely configuring IT equipment, including laptops and mobile devices, and prepares candidates for the Cyber Basics assessment.

Once candidates pass the Cyber Basics assessment, they attend the one-day Cyber Essentials Assessor training. From there, they can be employed by a Certification Body (CB) as a Trainee Cyber Essentials Assessor. Under the supervision of an experienced mentor, Trainee Assessors gain practical experience conducting Cyber Essentials assessments. While the mentor retains responsibility for the work, the Trainee is actively involved, building their skills and confidence from day one.

An ICT Level 3 Apprenticeship is integrated as part of the Trainee Cyber Essentials Assessor pathway for eligible candidates. This is delivered by apprenticeship organisation, The Development Manager (TDM), who collaborated with IASME to develop the additional Cyber Essentials module which forms part of the apprenticeship.

“We are proud and excited to be partnering with IASME on this initiative, working together to increase the number of qualified Cyber Essentials Assessors across England and strengthen the country’s cyber security ecosystem”

Derrin Kent, Co-Director of The Development Manager

After approximately two years of mentorship and hands-on experience, Trainees can take the Assessor Skills Exam to become full Cyber Essentials Assessors.

A career pathway with promising long-term opportunities

Once the Trainee becomes a full Assessor, the journey doesn’t end there. The doors are open to a wide range of career opportunities, from progressing to Cyber Essentials Plus Assessor to exploring specialised roles such as penetration testing, Cyber Advisor, or other advanced disciplines. With several years of experience under their belt, these professionals become highly sought-after in the industry.

Promoting diversity and inclusion

One of the most exciting aspects of the Trainee Cyber Essentials Assessor programme is its potential to increase diversity within the cyber security sector. The industry has long faced challenges with underrepresentation from certain groups, which not only limits the talent pool but also impacts the sector’s effectiveness. By creating accessible entry points and providing mentorship, the program aims to build a more diverse and inclusive workforce, better equipped to tackle complex challenges.

How to get involved

If you’re an aspiring cyber security professional or a Certification Body looking to expand your team, the Trainee Cyber Essentials Assessor programme offers an exciting opportunity. Candidates must complete the Cyber Basics assessment and the one-day Cyber Essentials Assessor training before being employed by a Certification Body. From there, they’ll gain hands-on experience under the guidance of a mentor, setting them on a path to a rewarding career in cyber security.

This year at CyberUK 26, we’re excited to promote and expand the Trainee Cyber Essentials Assessor programme, building on the success of last year’s pilot scheme.
